Prehistoric man's sketches were made with undeveloped hand tools carved by them. Line drawings were bold, and outlines were tinted with roots and plant extracts. Their art adorned their houses, the cave walls, and ceilings. Prehistoric art refers to any work of art like cave paintings, rock carvings and engravings, crude miniature carvings, and prehistoric artistic expressions. Pictures and sketches were representations of plants, animals, human form, and the human anatomy in a variety of figurative and abstract images. Their artwork commonly represents hunting scenes of bison, horses, reindeer, cattle, aurochs, and mammoths.  All prehistoric artists used their fingers and palms as painting tools.

These were the times most of us know as the Stone Age, but the Stone Age consisted of three different periods:

• Paleolithic period

• Mesolithic period

• Neolithic period

The Pre-historic people created their art in all types of rock surfaces - in caves, rock shelters, and cliffs. The main form of prehistoric art is stone, rock art, and cave art and includes:

1. Petroglyphs – Prehistoric rock carvings and engravings as can be originated in the Blombos Cave Engravings.
2. Eggshell Engravings – Crosshatching outlines scratched on Ostrich eggshells
3. Rock Engravings – Rock engravings in non-figurative signs and circle symbols
4. Pictographs – Cave murals developed in the form of sketches, hand patterns, hand prints, or painted signs, and symmetrical symbols.
5. Megaliths – Calculated arrangements of standing rocks or stones as can be found at Stonehenge.
